Resumo
This research analyzed the discourses about contemporary youth in the Folha de São Paulo
newspaper from the school occupations between the years 2015 and 2016. For this, we use as
methodology the cultural studies of the Media proposed by Kellner (2001), which proposes a
critical reading of the media and as a basis of support, the technique of content analysis
proposed by Laurence Bardin (1977). Our objective is to problematize the issue of the political
participation of the youths represented by the press, analyzing how the media written in the
newspaper Folha de S. Paulo represented the youth category in the journalistic pieces related to
the occupations. Throughout the text, we study the studies on the Sociology of Youth, youth
cultures and their diversity, the socio-political context in which the occupations took place, the
importance of the school for these youths who occupied the public schools, as the young people
used the protagonism youths to claim their rights, the socio-historical context of the newspaper
Folha de São Paulo and how the media in question reported the movement of occupations. In
all, 146 journalistic pieces were analyzed between November 2015 and December 2016. As
theoretical references, we use authors who research on youth and contemporaneity, politics,
education and the press as Abramo (1994), Coimbra and Nascimento (2012), Castro (2012),
Mayorga (2017), Pais (2003), Bourdieu (1983), Ariès (1981), Dayrell (2007), Mariano (2010),
Savage (2009), Solano Brandão (1995). We find that young high school students who have
risen against arbitrary measures by governments have been portrayed as dangerous and
uproarious and not under the influence of juvenile protagonists. The research is part of the
Group of Studies on Childhood, Youth and Contemporary Culture (GEIJC), in the research line
Childhood and Contemporary Youth: Policies, Rights and Diversity of the Postgraduate
Program in Education (PPGEdu) of the Federal University of Mato Grosso- University Campus
of Rondonópolis.
